Topsoil

Topsoil is used to improve levels, replace removed ground and create a suitable surface for planting or turf. Screened products are processed to remove larger stones and debris, producing a more consistent material that is easier to spread and cultivate. Topsoil is not the same as compost: soil provides structure and mineral content, while compost is primarily used to add organic matter and improve growing conditions. The two may be combined where appropriate for the plants and project.

Before spreading topsoil, remove waste, perennial weeds and unsuitable material from the area. Break up compacted subsoil to support drainage and avoid placing good soil over an impermeable surface. Spread the topsoil to the depth required by the application, allowing for settlement, then level and lightly consolidate it. For turf, finish with a fine, even surface without soft hollows. For planting, consider the drainage, soil reaction and needs of the species being introduced.

Calculate the required volume by multiplying the area in square metres by the intended depth in metres. For example, depth must be converted from millimetres before calculating cubic metres. Allow extra for settlement, uneven ground and unavoidable handling losses. Bulk-bag weights and volumes are approximate because moisture and natural composition can vary. Arrange for topsoil to be placed on a clean, accessible surface and use it as soon as practical. Cover stored material during prolonged wet weather and keep it separate from rubble or sub-base aggregates. Avoid trafficking freshly spread soil with heavy machinery where possible, as compaction can restrict drainage and root growth and may require further cultivation.
