About Slate
Slate chippings work particularly well in modern landscaping, but they can also complement traditional brick, timber and natural stone. Blue and grey tones provide a cool, understated finish, while plum shades can add warmth and contrast around planting. The colour often becomes deeper when wet, making slate especially effective near ponds and water features. It can also be used around pots, raised beds and decorative focal points where a tidy surface is required.
Choosing the correct size will affect both appearance and performance. Smaller chippings generally create a more closely packed surface that is comfortable for light foot traffic, while larger pieces produce a bolder, more textured result. Slate is a natural material, so individual pieces and separate batches may vary in thickness, shape and colour. Product photography provides a representative guide, but exact shades cannot be guaranteed.
Prepare the area before installation by removing vegetation, levelling the ground and creating an appropriate base. A permeable landscape membrane can help suppress weeds while allowing drainage. Measure the area and decide on the finished depth before calculating the quantity required. Our material calculator offers a useful estimate for selected products, although uneven ground, settlement and site-specific conditions may increase the amount needed.
Slate generally needs little maintenance, but removing fallen leaves and periodically redistributing the chippings will preserve its appearance. Edging can prevent pieces moving onto lawns or paved areas. Rinse dusty slate where appropriate after installation to reveal its natural colour. Avoid using unsuitable chemical cleaners near planting or ponds, and replace displaced material as the surface settles.
Slate is available in different bag formats so you can order for a small border or a much larger landscaping project. Delivery cost and method are calculated from the quantity and destination postcode; eligible in-stock bags can also be ordered for Click & Collect from WV9 5BD.
