About Decorative Gravels
Decorative gravel is a versatile alternative to paving, concrete and planted ground cover. It can define pathways, create low-maintenance borders, refresh tired driveways and provide a neat finish around sheds, pots and garden structures. Different stones produce noticeably different results: warm buff and golden tones can soften traditional spaces, while greys and mixed natural colours often suit modern gardens and driveways. Consider the surrounding brickwork, paving and planting when selecting a colour.
The stated gravel size is an approximate grading, and individual pieces will naturally vary in shape, colour and dimension. Finer gravels can settle into a more closely packed surface, while larger stones create a bolder texture and may be better suited to decorative areas. For driveways and frequently walked paths, choose a product recommended for that use and install it over a stable, well-compacted base. A suitable landscape membrane can help separate the gravel from the soil and reduce weed growth.
Measure the area carefully before ordering and allow for the intended depth, ground conditions and any settlement. Our online calculator can help estimate the required quantity, although it should be treated as guidance rather than a substitute for an on-site assessment. Natural aggregates can change appearance when wet and may differ slightly between loads, so ordering the complete project quantity together is advisable where visual consistency is important.
Maintenance is normally straightforward. Rake gravel periodically to restore an even surface, remove accumulated leaves and return displaced stones from adjoining areas. Suitable edging reduces migration, particularly beside lawns and paths. If a driveway develops ruts or standing water, correct the base or drainage issue rather than simply adding more decorative material over the affected area.
TW Builders Merchants supplies decorative gravel for trade and domestic landscaping projects, with fulfilment based on bag size, quantity and postcode. Eligible products may be collected from our WV9 5BD depot, while larger orders can be delivered using an appropriate local or pallet service.
