About Grass Seed
The best seed mixture depends on how the lawn will be used. General-purpose mixtures are suited to many family gardens, while harder-wearing blends can be more appropriate for active areas. Fine lawn seed prioritises appearance but may require more careful maintenance. Conditions also matter: shade, drainage, soil type and the amount of foot traffic can all affect establishment. Review the product specification and select a mixture suited to the site rather than choosing on pack size alone.
For a new lawn, remove weeds and debris, cultivate the soil and create a level, firm seedbed. Rake the surface to a fine tilth before sowing at the recommended rate. For repairs or overseeding, mow the existing grass, remove thatch and loosen the surface so the seed can make contact with soil. Distribute seed evenly in two directions, lightly rake it in and water with a fine spray. Protect the area from birds, pets and heavy traffic while germination takes place.
Keep the surface consistently moist without flooding it, particularly during dry or windy weather. Germination time varies with the mixture, temperature and ground conditions. Once the new grass is established, make the first cut with sharp mower blades on a high setting and avoid removing too much growth at once. Ongoing mowing, feeding and aeration will help develop a dense and resilient lawn.
Spring and early autumn often provide useful combinations of soil warmth and natural moisture, although sowing success ultimately depends on actual conditions. Avoid seeding frozen, waterlogged or extremely dry ground. If irrigation is limited, delay the work until regular watering is practical. Keep spare seed stored dry and sealed for compatible repairs later in the season.
Use the stated coverage rate to calculate how many packs are needed and include a small allowance for uneven sowing or future repairs. Selected 1kg grass seed bags can travel using our courier delivery method, while other products may have different fulfilment options.
