About Building Sands
Different sands perform different roles. Building sand has a fine, workable texture that makes it commonly used for bricklaying mortar and pointing. Sharp sand contains coarser, more angular particles and is frequently selected for concrete mixes, floor screeds, paving beds and drainage applications. Kiln-dried sand is a fine, dry product designed for brushing into the joints of block paving. Ballast combines sand and stone and is normally mixed with cement and water to produce concrete.
Using the correct sand helps achieve the required workability, strength and finish. Always follow the project specification and the recommended mix proportions for the chosen application. Colour and texture can vary because sand is a naturally sourced material, so separate loads may not be identical. Where appearance matters, particularly for visible mortar or pointing, ordering enough material from the same supply batch can help improve consistency.
Estimate the quantity by measuring the work area and considering the required depth or mix volume. Bulk bags are convenient for larger jobs, while smaller bags can reduce waste and handling difficulties on repair work or sites with restricted access. Approximate weights, uses and relevant product details are shown on individual pages. Our calculators provide helpful estimates for selected applications, but allowance should be made for compaction, wastage and uneven surfaces.
Plan where the material will be unloaded and how it will be protected before delivery. Keep sand clear of soil, leaves and other contamination, and position bags away from drains or areas prone to flooding. If work will take place over several days, covering loose material can make consistent mixing easier and reduce the effect of changing moisture levels.
