About Building Sand
Building sand is sometimes called soft sand because its smaller, rounded particles help create a pliable mortar. When combined with the correct cement, water and any specified additives, it can produce a mix suitable for laying bricks and blocks or completing repair work. It should not automatically be substituted for sharp sand, which has coarser particles and is generally better suited to concrete, screeding, paving and drainage-related applications.
The appropriate mortar mix depends on the type of masonry, exposure, structural requirements and project specification. Too much water can weaken the finished mix, while incorrect proportions can affect strength, movement and appearance. Follow the material manufacturer’s instructions and relevant professional guidance. Where colour consistency is important for visible joints, be aware that natural variations in sand and cement can change the final shade. Ordering sufficient material together and measuring each batch consistently can help reduce differences.
Bulk bags provide an efficient quantity for extensions, walls and larger landscaping jobs, while smaller bags are easier to handle for repairs and limited-access sites. Check the approximate weight and product information before ordering, then calculate the number of bags required from the anticipated mortar volume. Allow for waste, variations in joint thickness and site conditions. Store bagged materials in a suitable location and protect them from contamination before use.
Moisture content can influence how much water a mix requires, particularly when sand has been stored outdoors. Add water gradually and keep proportions consistent from one batch to the next. Clean mixing equipment between uses and avoid retempering mortar that has begun to set. Sensible preparation helps produce more uniform joints and reduces avoidable material waste.
